There can be many causes but that does not matter when your precious cell phone gets drowned in water!
What matters is how to save it from irreversible damage.

Here is what you should do in case this ever happens to you :-

1. You've discovered/realized your cell phone has been submerged in water. Regardless of how long it was underneath you should follow the same procedure.

DO NOT PANIC !
But act fast.
Remove your cell phone from the water as quickly as possible. Don’t even think a second. Take it out!

2. Immediately remove all removable parts including: phone battery, SIM card, MMC, Front & Back cover and any other easily removable parts. Do not go to great lengths to remove covers or circuit boards that were never meant for your removal.

Removing battery is of utmost importance, as alone water does not harm phone but electricity in combination with water is hazardous.
If there is no electrical current while water resides inside your cell phone, it has a much better chance of surviving.

3. If your cell phone fell in salt water, rinse it completely with distilled water / fresh water before proceeding to the steps mentioned here. The salt can further damage your cell phone and increase the risk of corrosion.

4.Shake the water out of your cell phone. Hold it tight, then shake it out with large downwards arm movements, as if you were loosing your temper and throwing it away. If drops of water land on the floor, it is a good indication that the technique was successful.

5. Remove the excess water. Sacrifice many sheets of tissue paper / clean dry cloth and press them against your cell phone. Do it again and again with dry paper.
If there is water inside the display, do not hesitate to press gently on it. It may succeed in forcing more water out of it. Then absorb it again with paper.

6. Let the phone dry on its own. DO NOT apply direct heat like a hair dryer or heater. The best option is to leave it out in a well ventilated area somewhere in the sunlight. Direct sunlight may not be the best option. A light powered light bulb (less than 60W) is also an option if sunlight is hard to come by.
Never place the battery near a source of heat. It may explode!

7.Have Patience : Leave the phone for a minimum of 24 hours (even up to three days) or until all items appear dry. You only have one shot to restart the phone so it better be completely dry or all bets are off. Patience is a virtue in this case. Because you generally can't open the phone from all of its components there may be water logged in some corner. You don't want rust, among other problems, to develop in the unit so work hard to remove all moisture.
Repeat step 4 & 5 . If water still comes out of it when shaking it, or if the display is foggy, wait another 24 hours.

8.Re-assemble phone placing battery in last, power on, watch the screen come to life! Generally when you submerge the phone the first thing to go is the LCD screen. Generally though, the rest of the body and hardware functions.

9. Thank me, I saved your phone.
